The aims of teaching and learning in History are to develop pupils’ historical skills, understanding and knowledge, as well as developing core skills such as Literacy, Maths and ICT.

History is taught in a way that motivates pupils, stimulating their interest and curiosity in the subject. Pupils learn through a wide range of experiences such as using artefacts, reading, drama, conducting research, going on visits and talking to visitors. History is also reinforced through teaching and learning in other subjects such as Literacy and Art.

Time periods and events in history are taught as topics and children learn about when things happened, including in relation to other time periods and events. Pupils are assessed on their progression through history skills on an ongoing basis.
